If you've ever tried to catch a barbell with a "hook grip" catch, you know how hard it is to keep a solid grip at the beginning when the thumb is not used to it. The same applies to work on the pull-up bar - some athletes need an additional stimulus in the form of a tape, to maintain a sure grip from the beginning to the end of training.
